Two years in the making, ground is officially broke for Lansing's Stadium District.
Developer Pat Gillespie, along with community leaders and Mayor Virg Bernero, turned the Thursday morning.
The Stadium District is a $13 million investment which will take up an entire city block and stand four stories tall. There's living and office space and Gillespie says hundreds of people have already put their names on the list waiting for the condos and apartments. Retail space is filling up fast too, Fifth Third Bank has already committed to the project as has Briarwood Realty.
There were a few people protesting the project at Thursday's ceremony. A group of concerned citizens picketed with signs reading, "Are your tax dollars being spent on this project?"
Gillespie says his incentives were figured on the tax dollars he pays and none of the money will come from the city's general fund or tax base as a whole.
