Interdepartmental Probes on Child Murder Cases

Some lawmakers want more authority to avoid future child deaths such as the Ricky Holland murder, and legislation toward that end will be introduced soon.

Under current state law the Children's Ombudsman's office is under the control of the state Human Services Department which deals with abused children. When something goes wrong, as in the Ricky Holland murder case, the department ends up investigating itself and a lawmaker tells News 10 that could result in a flawed probe.

Rep. David Law wants to transfer the Ombudsman's agency from the department to the legislature where lawmakers would have more access to the files on abused children. Law says that will assure more independent investigations and will help prevent more deaths in Michigan.

A house vote on the transfer could come within the next two weeks.
