Gas Prices Dropping

Several of the customers at Kildea's Marathon in East Lansing turned around and decided to fill up their tank after noticing the $2.49 sign. Angela Porter was one of them, thinking about the cost difference between today's price and that from a month ago.
"It's like maybe $25.00 to $30.00 to fill up versus $50.00."

But while many hope gas prices will continue to decline, Kent Kildea, owner of four different gas stations around the area, says don't get your hopes up too much.

"I don't think there will be a lot more of a drop with the barrel still staying around $70.00. There hasn't been that much of a downward trend in the barrel price."

Locally the average price of gas is now $2.49 compared to last week's average of $2.71. That's more than $0.20 lower according to AAA.

"Fuel prices start to drop as they convert over to winter fuels and heating oils."

Kildea also says gas prices were high in August for several reasons.

"With the risk of hurricanes going through in the past there was the speculation that supplies would get real tight, so a lot of the decrease we've seen is just correcting that."

But as soon as the turn of the year begins, gas prices should go back up as consumer demand increases.
