There are close to 500 red-tagged homes among the 52,000 housing units throughout the city of Lansing.

State Senator Virg Bernero says he wants to send a message to absentee landlords, the party is over.

An amended state law would help aid cities in demolishing houses when significant attempts at repairs are not made for two years.

Bernero says if he's elected mayor, he'll appoint a housing a czar for Lansing.

Residents who live near red-tagged houses say they are eyesores, cause the property value to decrease, and present an invitation to crime and destruction.
