In a News 10 consumer alert---
Nearly 50,000 pounds of "Richland Hills" sliced apples are being recalled because they might be contaminated with listeria.
The sliced apples were distributed through retail stores, food service and fast food outlets.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.
The sliced apples were distributed in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa and Louisiana through retail stores, food service and fast food outlets. The recalled products' labels include Apple Dippers, Organic Sliced Apples, Crunch Pak Organic Slices Apples and Apple Nibblers. The recalled products also include Pearson Foods fruit trays. For more information, consumers may call 800-811-8088.
