A proposed rule change could bring added literacy activities to Michigan childcare centers.
A new rule for day care licensing would require child care centers to set aside 30 minutes a day for developmentally appropriate literacy activities.
State officials estimate that about two-thirds of all centers actively work with their kids for at least 30 minutes. The proposed rule will be discussed at a public hearing on June 13.
It will then be submitted to the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules for final approval. If approved, the rule would go into effect on Sept. 1.
There are currently about 4,800 childcare centers in Michigan, housing more than 200,000 kids.
