They wake up the Capital City with the latest hip-hop and R&B hits, but Power 96.5's morning team of J.D. and Larie James are taking kids step by step to get them healthier.

"Our biggest goal is to fight childhood obesity. That's a major problem so we're trying to get kids moving with outdoor activities," says J.D., 96.5 FM radio personality.

They're visiting various community centers with the Lansing Parks & Recreation Department, playing Red Light, Green Light, Red Rover, any activity to keep kids moving. It's an effort to fight childhood obesity.

"We're also taking active fieldtrips to Whirlyball and pools. We've got to keep kids interested too," adds Bryan Beverly, Lansing Parks & Recreation.

According to the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, almost 40% of Michigan boys and girls are overweight, and as helpful as community programs can be, parents need to do their part as well.

"Get out and play with your kids. We also need the exercise, so what a better way to spend time with them and get exercise for yourself," comments Larie James, 96.5 FM radio personality.

Larie and JD say if kids keep the momentum going, everyone including adults will be stepping to the same beat, and hopefully slimming down to a healthier community.
