Local Dealers Bask In Sales Boost

It's a sight for car dealers' sore eyes: People putting pen to paper-- and purchasing a new ride.
"The first half of the month wasn't that great but the last 10 days have been been significantly better, a lot more traffic and a lot more people buying cars," says Jeff Crippen, who owns Crippen Auto Mall in Grand Ledge.
Crippen says now that the bridge loan money is coming through, so too are the customers.
"Probably 40 percent of our sales for the months were in the last six or seven days," he says. "[Customers] are feeling better about the economy. The government helped, GMAC (low financing) helped, the fact the rebates are still very good, incredible dollar amounts-- all of that combined had a good impact on making people feel better about going out and purchasing a vehicle."
If you're one of those people looking for a new car, you don't have to worry about vehicles being in stock. General Motors spokeswoman Kelly White tells us there are more than 700 Lansing-made crossover vehicles ready to be bought right now.
We've learned there are 197 Buick Enclaves, 207 Saturn Outlooks and 302 GMC Acadias right now either at dealerships, in transit or sitting in lots ready to be shipped across the country.
181 Cadillac CTS, 205 SRX and 225 STS-- Lansing-made vehicles, too-- are also ripe for the picking.
The large volume of product had worried Crippen, but as much now.
"Feels a lot better now than it did in the first part of December, nice to see that change in the economy" Crippen says.
A change he hopes will continue.
