Spartan Village Closes Forever

High fives weren't hard to come by at the Spartan Village Elementary School Friday afternoon.

Sparty, Michigan State University's mascot, distributed hundreds of hand slaps to children and teachers as they celebrated the last day of school singing and laughing on the playground.

But along with the happy celebrations came tears, as students and teachers realized budget cuts are forcing the school to close forever.

The East Lansing School District must shave $4.2 million from the budget, and closing the 284-student, K-2nd grade school will help save money.

Many Spartan Village teachers will continue teaching in the East Lansing school district. The principal, Bill Gale, will replace the retiring principal at Pinecrest Elementary.
