Michigan's Unemployment Fund in the Red
The state owes nearly $100 million more to the U.S. Department of Labor than it did three weeks ago.

For 23 weeks I recieved my unemployment checks no later than saturday. Her it is thursday feb,5 and still no check! The local post office phones are getting lit up with everyone wanting to know whats going on. An employee suspects the state of sitting on the checks, because the contracter has not shown up to drop off the checks!

I'm 15 years old and im doing a research essay. The question i decided to research about is "How can Michigans Government find ways to make more jobs for the citizens?" Alot of these comments have helped me understand alot more about this topic. My stepdad has been laid off before and got re-hired. It took a very long time for us to get back on our feet. Its very hard for a kid to have to watch their parent struggle. And it also scaries me to know that i may be in the same situtation in the future. He just told me today that he is getting laid off again this friday, and its scary because we have to go through everything all over again. So please dont judge people off of what they say on this website. Its just what they know and understand about the topic. Their still learning and you cant expect everyone to be A perfect at this very touchy topic.

From what i have read of the posted comments, and from what i have heard on the news, i believe that not very many people really have a clue on how bad the economy and employment aspects really are, the national unemployment rate is grossly underestimated, most of the people that are unemployed do not qualify for unemployment benefits, and there are not any jobs available for people who want to work, things are going to get a lot worse, for the people who can not work, it should not be so hard to get help, i feel the Government should trim there fat wallets instead of taking from us

New webster dictionary entry - Yuppy white trash - Someone who lives on credit or government handouts with no means or plans to repay their debts.

I have been calling both MARVIN (to claim my weeks of unemployement)and the actual unemployement line for the last half hour and neither line is accepting calls at this time. What is going on?

I feel sorry for the people who can not find work, but you have to be willing to pay cut and a reduction in lifestyle in order to get ahead.

People should wonder how much they were getting overpaid if they get fired and can not find another job at the same rates.

In response to "Pam", I was laid off in January of 2007. I applied for unemployment benefits and was also granted the extension that was passed in June-July 2007, thank goodness. I certainly wasn't sitting around the house just collecting my benefits; I was looking for a job. It took me eight months to find a job, any job that would hire me. I tried fast food (overqualified), retail (overqualified), and finally found a position making about half of what I was making in my previous position, but I took it because I needed the work. Get your head out of the sand, sweetie. The job situation in Michigan is dismal, particularly if you actually have skills and need a living wage to support a family. I can't believe that there are people out there in this state who still believe that the unemployed in the State are unemployed by choice. In most cases, they don't have a choice. Now you advocate not extending benefits, exactly how many people living on the streets would make you happy?

to "J"...the sad thing is is that i personally know someone who was happy to get fired last spring andhas been doing nothing but collecting unemployment and will know probably get an extension..using up precious funds because this person is the laziest person you have ever met! Its disgusting and embarrassing and i do not associate with this person anymore but i sure wish the unemployment would do a freaking audit of this kid! maybe they should do that to a lot of people and it would at least free up some funds for people who DID want to work but had no choice!!!!

First of all I wish people would learn the difference between your and you're and also there and their. Take 10 minutes and open a dictionary. You'll come across sounding a lot more educated than you obviously are. There are jobs here, I've been looking for an employee for some time, however nobody who has applied has the proper knowledge and experience. Unfortunately that doesn't keep them from expecting compensation as if they do. My last employee practically begged me to lay him off so he could collect unemployment. So just maybe Pam does have a clue after all. And just maybe Anonymous is one of those under-skilled, over compensated union members who like to talk loud because they have no facts to back up their positions. The job market is tough if you have no marketable skills. The days of earning top pay for the skill of knowing how to put a bolt in a hole are GONE!

Keep in mind that the MAXIMUM benefit amount is $724. NOBODY can survive off that, and to think that people WANT to stay on Unemployment to "not work" is totally ignorant.

Pam, are you not educated with the current job market? That 10% does not include those who have used up all their unemployment. Lose your job and see what the outcome is... Be thankful if your working and you have a wage that will get you by.

and where are these jobs that they should be required to get? PAM, you don't have a clue!!!

people worried about things getting worse and turning to the state for help dont worry they are not that generous, i lost my job of twelve years and i get $10.00 to help with food and my son gets medical coverage yet i don't because i have to many assets. Like i could sell my house and make a profit with things the way they are. I worked all these years and helped to support these systems that are in place but now that i need help this is what i get. Tell the federal goverment to fix the big three by treating them like they are on welfare go in there and make them cut the fat around there liqudate their assests and oh the poor auto workers tell them to take a pay cut if they want to keep there jobs and tell the union to take a hike.
