Authorities say an inmate at a prison near Ypsilanti burned a corrections officer's face by tossing a mixture of petroleum jelly and water he heated in a microwave.
The Detroit Free Press and The Ann Arbor News report the union representing guards at Michigan prisons wants the state to remove prisoner access to microwaves after Friday's attack.
Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan says the 49-year-old officer at Huron Valley Men's Facility in Washtenaw County's Pittsfield Township had second-degree burns and possible long-term damage to one eye.
Marlan says the Michigan Corrections Organization's request is under consideration.
The 48-year-old inmate is serving a 39- to 90-year sentence for second-degree murder. He's been transferred.
