One man is dead and an officer injured in a Dewitt shooting Thursday morning.

47-year-old Nathan Oakes tried breaking into his estranged wife's apartment on the 800 block of Dewitt Road at 2:15 a.m.

The woman called the police, and when officers arrived on the scene Oakes opened fire...shooting a Dewitt Township Officer in the face.
Police fired back and the suspect was killed in the exchange.

The officer underwent surgery, and his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Police tell News 10 they found two loaded guns on Oakes and another in his car, all of which were semi-automatic weapons. Police say that shows he was ready to inflict great harm on his wife.
