An Albion woman is safe today because a neighbor didn't let pregnancy get in the way of rescuing her from a fire.
Jessica Bates expects to give birth to twin girls any day now. The 22-year-old woman was sitting up late Saturday night when she heard Barbara Wellman crying for help across the street. Wellman is paralyzed from the waist down and uses a wheelchair.
Bates rushed to Wellman's apartment and helped her get outside, then banged on other people's doors to warn them. Another neighbor grabbed a hose and doused the flames before firefighters could arrive.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Bates says she knew it was risky to enter the burning apartment, but couldn't leave another person in danger.
