Only a fraction of the desired Disaster Relief Fund money is left in the accounts of the National Chapter of the American Red Cross. The fund is so low that local Red Cross officials wonder if an emergency hits mid-Michigan will the funds be there?

The Disaster Relief Fund helps families and people in need of food, shelter and critical supplies in the event of a catastrophic situation.

The mid-Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross receives funding from the national chapter for disaster cases above $3,500 in cost.

Officials say the reason the fund has only $5 million of the desired $50 million is due to a sluggish economy.
