Joe Gomand drove the cab as fast as he could, but his 38-year-old fare made her delivery before he made his.
The woman was in labor when he picked her up Wednesday at a Ferndale apartment. They were trying to get to Royal Oak's William Beaumont Hospital about five miles away, but she delivered a baby boy in the backseat of the A1 Transportation Co. cab.
"All I could do was talk to her to try and keep her calm," Gomand told The Daily Tribune. "She was calm and then she started yelling `Oh, oh,' and boom, her baby was born."
Gomand had pulled into the parking lot of Ray & Sons auto repair and radioed his dispatcher for an ambulance. Paramedics and police officers from Royal Oak and Pleasant Ridge helped deliver the baby in this Detroit suburb.
"The driver pulled in and that baby was on his mother's belly in a couple minutes," said Ron Krefski, one of the owners of Ray & Sons.
The woman and her child were fine following the delivery, police said. She asked not to be identified.
