The Michigan State University board of trustees approved a 6% increase in housing costs Friday. Officials say rising food, utility and high-speed internet costs contributed to increase. A quarter of the money raised by the hike will go into a maintanance fund. MSU has many aging dorms; the newest built in 1967.
Trustees say even with the increase, MSU's housing is still a bargain. The 6% works out to $298 more a year for a shared room and 18-20 meals a week. The total cost is $5,230 for two semesters. That's one of the lowest costs in the state and the Big 10.
The increase is likely in addition to double digit tuition increases.
Some Spartan football fans will also be paying more. Season ticket holders are being asked to donate between $200-$500 to the athletic dept. Ralph Young Fund, depending where their seats are.
