The Wayne-Westland Community Schools has canceled classes for 13,000 students for a fourth day as teachers remain off the job to protest lack of a contract.
More than 800 teachers in the western Wayne County district went on strike Monday. The Wayne-Westland Education Association says benefits and class size are among the major sticking points in the contract talks.
The district accuses the union of violating Michigan's ban on teacher strikes. State law allows districts to fine teachers a day's pay for each day they're on strike and possibly fire them.
Both sides are due in Wayne County Circuit Court for a Thursday morning hearing on whether the teachers should be ordered back to work.
