Experts from the state's West Nile virus response group met Wednesday to discuss Michigan's plan for fighting the mosquito-borne illness.

The state's plan focuses on four elements on communication, surveillance, personal protection, and mosquito control. Health officials continue to stress the importance of the elimination of breeding sites, such as standing water.

Michigan will continue its lab testing for human cases and the Michigan Department of Agriculture will provide mosquito identification training to local health officials.

Last year, Michigan had the second highest number of human cases in the nation. There were 644 cases with 51 resulting in death.
