President Bush says the death of Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi could "turn the tide" in the war in Iraq. Considering the devastation and terror Al-Zarqawi has cause by planning bombings, kidnappings, and assassinations, reactions to the news of his assassination are emotional. This especially in Dearborn, a city with one of the largest concentrations of Arab-Americans in the US.
One Dearborn resident, Ghassan Charara said, " Nobody ever liked him in Dearborn. Nobody ever liked him. I don't know who likes him and I don't know who doesn't like him but me and my family and a lot of people in Dearborn here. They hate his guts."
Now the question is whether President Bush is correct in saying this could turn the tide in Iraq. Distinguished Michigan State Professor of International Studies Mohammed Ayoob says while the killing of Al-Zarqawi is a great accomplishment for the U.S. Military, it may not make a difference. He says, " Just by killing one person its not going to go away."
Professor Ayoob also noted that while Zarqawi is the leader of the fundamentalist insurgency, not all insurgents are fundamentalists. Instead, many are what you could call "Iraqi Nationalists" who are opposed to the occupation by the U.S. in Iraq. As a result the United States still has many enemies in a country it says it is fighting to make free.
