The general in charge of all National Guard forces is scouting locations for a new Air Force light cargo squadron.

Lieutenant General Steven Blum toured the Battle Creek air base with Governor Granholm and the state's guard commander.

Granholm is advocating Battle Creek as a site for a number of possible missions the Pentagon is considering. She says the base is ideal for its proximity and infrastructure.

A base-realignment committee voted to keep Battle Creek open but move about 15 A-Ten aircraft to Selfridge Air Base in Macomb County.

Granholm's office says a new mission could help save about 300 full-time jobs that will be jeopardized by the move.
