Representatives from the Tobacco Free Michigan Action Coalition say they believe a former employee may be involved in the disappearance of at least $50,000.
The group recently fired an employee who had access to financial records and checks after the group's first annual audit allegedly turned up forged checks.
A preliminary police investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made, and the prosecutor's office hasn't filed any criminal charges.
The Tobacco Free Michigan Action Coalition - which works with local community groups to educate people about the harms of smoking - has an annual budget of approximately $500,000. That money comes from a Robert Wood Johnson grant, which will be dispersed annually for three years.
