The Michigan Army National Guard and a family in Midland is mourning the death of a serviceman in Iraq.

Officials say Army Specialist Richard A. Goward was killed Monday when his truck collided with another truck.

He was assigned to the Midland-based 1460th Transportation Company.

He served on active duty with the Army from 1990 to 1996. He joined the Michigan Guard after the September Eleventh terror attacks.

His wife, Karen, says he was a wonderful husband and father who enjoyed jujitsu and outdoor activities.

Goward also is survived by two daughters, ages eight and five. No funeral arrangements had yet been made.

Major General Tom Cutler of the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs says they're deeply saddened by the loss.
