A Meridian Township surgeon is behind bars, charged with open murder in the 1968 death of his wife.

Dr. Charles Mercer, Jr. was arrested Monday morning at the same Tacoma Hills home his wife Sally Mercer was found dead in back in February of 1968. Her case was closed when her cause of death was determined to be Bulbar Polio. Detectives say foul play was suspected since day one and in 1995, her case was opened again.

Sally's body was exhumed in 2003 and a second autopsy showed Bulbar Polio was not the cause of death. No information is being released about how she was killed or why.

Advances in Forensic Science helped the Ingham County Cold Case Task Force crack the case says Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth.

Dr. Mercer is being held in the Ingham County Jail on a $2 million cash bond.
