The state House has passed a bill that would require U-S citizenship status be disclosed on Michigan driver's licenses.

The bill would require an applicant for a driver's license, if a citizen, to provide a statement attesting to citizenship.

The secretary of state would be required to issue a license that notes the driver is a citizen.

The secretary of state would be required to deny a driver's license to a person it determines is in the country illegally.

The bill passed the House by a 76-to-27 vote with several Democrats joining the Republican majority in support.

The legislation now goes to the Senate for its consideration.
