Great Lakes Compact
Lawmaker seeks assurances on Great Lakes pact

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) -- Not so fast on ratifying a compact to protect Great Lakes water from diversion. That's what a Michigan congressman is saying.
Democratic Representative Bart Stupak of Menominee wants the House Judiciary Committee to add new provisions to a report that would accompany the compact.
His changes wouldn't change the compact itself. But they would make clear that Congress doesn't regard Great Lakes water as a product or economic commodity subject to international trade law.
Many advocates are worried that foreign governments or companies might one day use trade treaties as leverage to get their hands on Great Lakes water.
