Wishful thinking or a better way? Lansing City Councilmember Carol Wood proposes change to Mayor Virg Bernero's budget balancing ideas.
Wednesday, the recommendations were submitted to Mayor Bernero. Wood suggests saving 38 city staff positions to the tune of $2.8 million. She also suggests not creating nearly $1,000,000 worth of new positions as suggested by Mayor Bernero. Wood does agree with the Mayor's decision to keep nearly $2,000,000 worth of city jobs vacant.
Council President Harold Leeman, Jr. says council is negotiating now and he hopes Mayor Bernero and his staff take the recommendations seriously.
In the new proposal, $210,000 worth of funding would be restored as well. The money would go to the city's golf courses, a sound wall, sidewalks and the South Side Community Center.
Mayor Bernero says the recommendations are a step backwards, wishful thinking and he will stand strong and stick to the suggestions he's already made.
The Council must vote on a balanced budget Monday.
