Tyson Foods, Inc., in cooperation with USDA, has voluntarily recalled 51,360 pounds of uncooked, foodservice chicken due to an undeclared soy-based allergen. There have been no reported illnesses associated with this product; however, the company has initiated the recall as a precautionary measure.

The affected products were sold to foodservice companies, which typically supply restaurants, and were not labeled for retail sale. The foodservice companies have been notified and asked to recover and hold the products further distributed to their customers until the products can be retrieved by Tyson.

Tyson has been in the process of reducing the number of allergens in the company’s foodservice products and produced some products with the old formulation while prematurely using a new label. The products were produced at the company’s Vicksburg, Mississippi, location between July 23, 2008, and August 5, 2008.

The foodservice items being recalled include:

*10-pound cases of “Standard Quality Uncooked Fritters, Old Fashioned Chicken Breast Tenderloins.” Each box bears the case code of “2523-954” as well as a package code of 2058VIC0400 through 0423.

*20-pound cases of “Spare Time Uncooked Fritters, Chicken Breast Tenderloins.” Each box bears the case code of “2523-861” as well as a package code of 2058VIC0419.

*10-pound cases of “Tyson Uncooked Chicken Breast Tenderloin Fritters.” Each box bears the code of “2989-928” as well as a package code of 2078VIC0408.

The affected products were delivered to foodservice customers in the following 29 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

While the product was sold to foodservice companies, consumers with questions may call Tyson at 1-800-233-6332.
