No one said campaigning to become the next Eaton County Sheriff would be easy.

"This is my first time in politics," Tom Reich said.

But Reich said he draws the line at hundreds of stolen campaign signs.

"We've lost about 150 in the past three to four weeks," he said.

So a stakeout was planned Monday Night at st. Joe and Canal Road. Reich said he waited in a church parking lot across the street when...

"All of a sudden my wife says, Tom, the sheriff's car just pulled up," Reich said.

That's when Reich claims they saw the sheriff's wife, Laurie Raines get out of the car and head toward his sign.

"I saw one person lean over my yard sign and it appeared to me they were trying to steal it," he said.

Not true said Laurie Raines.

She said she was putting her own sign in the yard.

"I put my sign in," she said. "I didn't touch Mr. Reich's sign. I didn't even get near his sign."

According to the police report, no signs were stolen Monday but a Reich sign that was laying on the side of the road near Mount Hope was taken in for fingerprint analysis.

The Raines said this is just a political ploy.

"I can't believe someone would stoop so low as to attack my family," Sheriff Mike Raines said. "We welcome an investigation from anyone. We have nothing to hide."

Reich disagrees.

"Why were they out at 10:15 at night? Why did they touch my sign? Why did they speed off? Those are the questions I have," Reich said.

Normally the Eaton County Prosecutor would have to authorize or reject the arrest warrant the state police requested.

In this case, he's sending the request on to the State Attorney General's office and asking the AG to assign a special prosecutor.

I am not Laurie Raines and AM in fact a senior at Michigan State. "Tom, the sheriff's car just pulled up" is what the article states. Not "A Sheriff's car"! It was the personal vehicle of the Sheriff and his wife (a mini-van) which was clearly marked with campaign signs. Maybe you should ask Tommy Bingo Reich or Big Mouth Brenda about the vehicle in their eyewitness account. So before you take things out of context, yes you need to get the facts straight! I wonder then how you will feel about insulting a higher education student. Stop being a mindless fool and do some research. Have some class!

MSU Student: I based my question on this article. Based upon the fact that you go to the extreme of insulting me and getting what seems to be horribly upset by this, I can only assume you are not an MSU student as I expect a level of sophistication from an educated person which apparently you are depraved of. Mrs Raines..shut up.

Joseph of Holt: Get your facts straight. The Sheriff and his wife were not in a county police vehicle but in their own personal vehicle which had a Mike Raines window sign on it. This allowed Reich and his "caveman" of a wife to clearly identify who the vehicle belonged to. Do the research and get your facts right before you run off at the mouth about lies to the taxpayers, fool!

I think the first question I would be asking Mr. Raines is 'What are you and your wife doing in a Sheriff's vehicle at night putting up your campaign signs? Why are the taxpayers paying for the vehicle and probably your salaries expense for your campaigning time?'

My goodness! anyone with half a brain can see this was dirty politics by Mr Reich and his wife. They were losing big time so they accuse the poor wife of something as a last minute sleeeezy campaign tactic. I'm glad Reich lost. He is a nut!
