"It would have been nice to know ahead of time," William Conrad said.

It turns out Conrad didn't know the house he's been renting in Charlotte for little over seven months used to be a meth lab.

"It makes me kind of nervous about what kind of people will come by thinking it's still the same place," Conrad said.

The information came from the Drug Enforcement Agency's online National Clandestine Registry.

There you can search your state and your county for lists of homes identified as meth labs.

"I'm definitely going to have to follow up on that," he said.

Meth explosions certainly get people's attention, but even after a lab is disabled chemicals remain.

So is it safe to live in a house with this kind of past?

James McCurtis of the State Department of Community Health said it's up to local health departments to oversee the clean-up at the home owner's expense.

"You have to wash the walls with warm soapy water and discard all porous items like drapes and carpets because chemicals seep into those kinds of things," McCurtis said.

After the home passes toxicology tests, McCurtis said it's safe to live there again.

"If I were a buyer, I would want to know if that house was a meth lab," Roger Weymouth said.

Real estate agent Roger Weymouth said it's not illegal for sellers to leave out this kind of information.

"There's really no concrete law that says the seller has to disclose that information," he said.

So he said buyer beware is your in the market for a new house.

"I would recommend doing some research," Weymouth said. "Get all the facts."

Perhaps State Buildings should be in more rural areas so they have room for a wind mill (alternative energy). This would save the tax payers who ultimately pay the costs.
