It's a sign you'll have to start getting used to at the Collins Road Post Office in Lansing: 'Window Closed."
"On August 16th we're anticipating changing our hours," says spokesman Mike Lee.
Here's the breakdown of the new hours:
Monday through Friday, instead of being open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., it'll be open from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.
And on Saturday, the hours will drop from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. currently down to 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Sundays will remain closed, and the lobby will stay open 24 hours every day.
Overall they'll be slashing 14 hours a week from their schedule.
And-- surprise surprise-- Lee chalks up the changes to the changing, challenging economy. He says businesses are in recession-like activities and sending fewer packages than before, which is resulting in less work volume for the post office. Plus, Lee says, people are opting to do business online instead of drive to the post office.
That's the explanation they're giving to customers, but customers aren't sold.
"It's an unfortunate thing because people depend on the post office to be open all the time," says Chris Lane of Lansing.
And customers aren't the only ones holding back their stamp of approval.
"They're definitely upset," says mail clerk union president Harold Juhl of the Collins Road employees.
Juhl says employees aren't looking forward to schedule changes-- and potential changes in service.
"I think it's affecting customers a lot," he says.
With more and more people going online to send their packages or using the automated postal center, the union worries their jobs could be further affected. Right now, the new hours won't affect their current jobs-- but the way things are going, Juhl says, you never know.
"The APC (automated postal center) is a thorn in our side, it takes away work from the window tellers," Juhl says.
But Lee says the post office has no choice but to give customers who want to save money options.
"We're not unique," he says. "Everyone is affected and businesses are impacted."
Now your errands will be, too.
