There is some delicate testing underway for NASA's next space vehicle, the orion.
The company building the ship's toilet system needs urine-- and lots of it-- to make sure it works properly. In fact, they need about eight gallons of urine per day.
Connecticut-based Hamilton Sundstrand sent an e-mail to employees at the Johnson Space Center recently asking for volunteers to collect their specimens between July 21st to July 31st for use in the tests.
It's full of solids and those solids can clog filters when getting rid of
stored urine.
And as one expert says, you can't make fake urine.
It will take the daily output of about 30 people to fill their testing needs.
Acidity levels are also a concern for the toilet system. The Orion will eventually carry astronauts to the Moon and then park in space
for up to six months.
The memo from Hamilton Sundstrand was posted on the web site
nasawatch.com... however, a company spokesman says it was not meant to go public.
