There are more honors for a fallen Concord Solider killed in Iraq. A VFW post will soon be renamed after Donald L. Wheeler.
The 22-year-old was killed in October of 2003 when his unit came under attack in Tikrit. He is buried with full military honors, receiving both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Now another honor for the local hero: Cladwell-Clark VFW Post in Jackson is changing its name to the Donald L. Wheeler VFW Post. A re-dedication ceremony is set for May 21.
Changing the name of a VFW post is rare and requires authorization from the National VFW. The local group is currently waiting to get that approval.
