With tears welling in his eyes, Matt McClanahan remembered the boy he thought of as a son.
Army Private First Class Jason Meyer, 23, was always someone who made people smile - or lifted their spirits when they were down, and now friends are doing everything they can to keep their memories of him strong.
The 1999 Howell High School graduate died Tuesday, friends say, when his carrier vehicle was hit, possibly by mortar fire. Meyer, who recently celebrated his first anniversary a few weeks ago, was a driver in the army's armored division.
Friends say he may have been patrolling the area around Baghdad airport when he was killed.
Meyer was active in a Masonic youth group called the Demolay's. He made several friends, and many young men in the group thought of him as their brother.
