There are 40 suggestions on Mayor Bernero's potential budget balancing strategies list. Everything from conducting an energy audit to increasing income tax collections is included.
The list is only a draft of what could be coming when Bernero presents his official budget to council at the end of March, but one item is already being questioned.
It has to do with keeping fire and police functions at 2006 budget levels. This just one day after Police Chief Mark Alley proposes a pricey plan to put one police officer in each of Lansing's four high schools. Putting the plan into action would cost $300,000.
Other suggestions to help balance the city's projected $10 to $11 million deficit include auditing health insurance coverage, evaluating the need to maintain all current fire stations and negotiating the delay of the next scheduled wage increase.
