Mid-Michigan is sparkling and sparking after freezing rain coated the area through the night.
Thousands are without power due to the heavy ice bringing down wires. Police and fire crews were busy all night and into the morning responding to calls of downed wires and transformers blowing up. Many exposed wires or branches became obstacles in the road. In some cases small fires started, but there have been no injuries reported.
The Lansing Board of Water and Light reported 19,000 people without power as of 6:00 a.m. The Consumers Energy outage map online shows large sections of Eaton County and the Owosso area also without power.
While the ice looks pretty, it's also making the road treacherous. Road crews worked around the clock to keep major roads, overpasses and bridges salted, but it's still extremely slick out there.
Police remind drivers to be careful as you finish Christmas shopping or hit the road to visit family. Law enforcement recommend not going out unless you have to, and remember to treat traffic lights that are out as four-way stops.
Call 9-1-1 for public safety concerns regarding exposed wires.
