The Michigan House has approved a bill that would let residents be notified by Email when a sex offender moves into their zip code.
People could sign up for a free Email notification service aimed at providing the most up-to-date information about potentially dangerous sex offenders moving into their neighborhoods.
The bill heads back to the Senate and could be on Governor Granholm's desk soon.
Supporters say the Email system would let people get important information without regularly having to the visit the state's sex offender Web site or check with law enforcement.
But critics say Michigan's sex offender registry can be misleading because some people on the list were teens who had consensual sex with boyfriends and girlfriends.
