Gov. Jennifer Granholm has ordered U.S. flags in Michigan lowered Tuesday in honor of an Army National Guard soldier killed in combat in Afghanistan.
Sgt. 1st Class Matthew L. Hilton of Livonia died June 26 after insurgents attacked his convoy with improvised explosive devices, small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. Two other U.S. soldiers also were killed.
Hilton was a graduate of Holt High School. His mother and step-father live in Diamondale.
The 37-year-old Hilton was part of the 425th Infantry Regiment based at Selfridge Air National Guard base in Macomb County's Harrison Township. He worked as a Lathrup Village police officer before his call-up. His wife Mary served with the National Guard in Iraq.
