Lip Balm Addiction?

The urban myth that lip balms are addictive is just that, a myth. Target pharmacist Tamara Mason says most people use chapsticks because of their soothing qualities.

"It feels good to put it on, and people like something that feels good. So they'll keep doing it. But it's not anything that's going to be detrimental to them."

Currently there is no scientific evidence supporting lip balm addiction. And experts agree that if a person thinks they're addicted, it's probably a mental addiction rather than a physical one.

"For the most part, a lot of them just have glycerin, which is a moisturizing agent. Your lips then feel extra moisture. When that wears off you want that extra moisture again."

Mason says lips balms like Chapstick, Carmex, and Blistex are perfectly safe to use. Even if they are used excessively, a person should not suffer any harmful physical effects.
