We are beginning a new weekly segment spotlighting health around the community. Each week, we will bring you a list of illnesses local doctors are reporting in their offices. From strep throat to the flu, we hope you'll use this information to keep your family healthy.
At Sparrow Family Medical Services in Lansing, Doctor David Luginbill has been treating patients for acute bronchitis. Symptoms include a cough and a fever. He recommends over the counter remedies as well as antibiotics and cough syrup if the condition is not better in a few days.
In children, Doctor Luginbill is treating RSV bronchiolitis. Symptoms include cough and fever. It can be treated with liquids and nebulizer breathing medicines.
In Dewitt at Sparrow Family Medical Services, Doctor Beinaz Menagi is treating patients for strep throat. Symptoms include sore throat, fever, headache, and sometimes nausea and vomiting.
Doctor Menagi recommends treating strep throat with antibiotics, pain and fever reducers. She says drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest.
At the same office, Doctor Peter Graham has seen cases of gastroenteritis. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. For treatment, Doctor Graham says to rest your stomach for four to five hours after vomiting before trying to drink, and don't put any food on your stomach. He recommends ice chips and small sips after waiting four to five hours. Be sure to advance your diet slowly and avoid spicy or greasy foods and anything with seeds for at least 24 hours.
Doctor Susan Caldwell also at Sparrow Family Services in Dewitt reports cases of influenza. She says symptoms include high fever, body aches, cough, and sore throat. It's treatable with an anti-viral medication if diagnosed in the first or second day. Otherwise she recommends supportive care, anti-inflammatories, and fluids.
However, Doctor Caldwell says the best remedy for influenza is to get your flu shot before you get sick.
What's Going Around will air weekly on Monday nights at 6 p.m. and Tuesday mornings at 6:30 a.m. on News Ten Today.
