If you've ever driven on Interstate 496 within Lansing City limits you know speeds can vary.
The Michigan State Police Traffic Services section has done some preliminary traffic studies and plans to do more in the future to determine if a higher speed would be better suited for the stretch.
The limit is currently 55 miles per hour, but State Police say even the preliminary studies done to date show a much safer speed would be within the 65 to 70 mile per hour range.
Early traffic studies on I-496 also show that even in unfavorable weather conditions only four to eight percent of drivers are traveling at or below the current speed limit.
