Torture is now officially banned in Michigan.

Governor Granholm signed a bill Tuesday that makes torture a crime punishable by a life prison sentence.

The legislation was introduced after the prosecutor in Huron County said he had to charge a man with kidnapping and abuse. The man, Stephen Cline of Pigeon, was accused of torturing his wife, but Michigan did not have a law banning torture.

Late last month, Cline was convicted of kidnapping and secretly confining Linda Cline. He also was convicted of 17 counts of first-degree abuse.

Cline faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced next month.
