Food Label Changes

For products made on or after Jan.1, their labels will be required to clearly identify any of the major food allergens. Those include products derived from milk, eggs, shellfish, fish, nuts, wheat and soybeans.

People with food allergies must be vigilant to check labels, but sometimes a poorly labeled or mislabeled product can land them in the hospital. Nearly 30,000 trips are made to the emergency room each year due to allergic reactions to foods and about 120 people die.

Products made and labeled before the New Year are not required to change their labels so doctors warn people to continue their vigilance on checking all products on grocery store shelves.
