Mining in Michigan

Mining is still very much an industry in Michigan. Most of the mining for iron ore is done above the ground in open pits in the Upper Peninsula.

Aside from a small underground mineral mine in the U.P., the only operating underground mine in the state is a salt mine in Detroit.

Michigan used to mine coal underground; there was even a coal mine near Williamston. Coal is now shipped in from West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio.
