House Clears Way for Michigan Wine Imports

Michigan residents soon may be able to have their favorite California red or Oregon white delivered at home.

The state House voted today to approve legislation that would allow in-state and out-of-state wineries to ship up to 15-hundred cases of wine a year directly to consumers. The bill now goes to Governor Granholm.

A state law ruled unconstitutional earlier this year by the U-S Supreme Court prohibited residents from having wine from out-of-state vintners directly shipped to consumers.

The legislation is drawing fire from some advocates for the state's wine industry.

They are worried because in-state wineries would have to use wholesalers to distribute their wine to restaurants and stores if the law is declared unconstitutional. Right now, they can self-distribute wine to those retailers.
