Capital Area United Way CEO Bob Berning resigned from his leadership position after 23 years in the organization.

Tom Chirgwin, chairman of the board of directors at the Capital Area United Way, said the board accepted his resignation with regrets, after voting during a special meeting Monday afternoon. The vote was not unanimous, according to Chirgwin.

Berning stepped down by submitting a letter of resignation to the board. He wrote, "This is the saddest letter I have ever written, and the most difficult. I tender my resignation as president of the Capital Area United Way."

Berning had no comment other than saying he would begin thinking about the future of his career starting Tuesday.

The board appointed Richard J. Liles as the interim director of the Capital Area United Way Director, while they do a nationwide search for a new leader.

Liles is currently on the board of directors at the Capital Area United Way. He also provides consulting and policy advice for public service organizations.
