Attorney General Opposes Bill Decriminalizing Marijuana

"We should not go down this road of legalizing drugs. It exposes young kids, children, to ever more potent drug use and I think that's not good for them in the future."

-- Bill Schuette
   Michigan Attorney General

Attorney General Bill Schuette told wilx.com Wednesday night he opposes a bill that would decriminalize marijuana in Michigan. Schuette, who's worked to tighten the state's medical marijuana law, said Michigan shouldn't go down the road towards legalization because it would expose kids to more-potent drug use.

The decriminalization bill was introduced Wednesday by Democratic representative Jeff Irwin of Washtenaw County and is supported by Republican Mike Shirkey of Jackson County. Both argue the state spends too many tax dollars putting marijuana users through the criminal justice system with little to show for it. Irwin also sees it as an issue of personal freedom.

There is NOTHING "science-based" about arresting 700,000 people/year for choosing a FAR safer and FAR less-addictive alternative to alcohol! We need to think about the children and get marijuana off of our streets and into our stores!!

Relatives of AG Schutte continue to profit from the illegality of cannabis. His immediate family has a vested interest in its continued illegality. Furthermore, he does not want to lose an important tool used to persecute poor people in this state. The gateway argument is bunk and most thinking people know this. If Bill Schutte is serious about keeping people off hard drugs such as heroin, he will stop making unreasonable arguments such as this, start supporting decriminalization of cannabis and begin enforcing drug trafficking laws for substances that are actually dangerous.
