Researchers out of the University of North Carolina compared flu-stricken obese mice with flu-stricken healthy-weight mice. Forty percent of the obese mice died within seven to 10 days while four percent of the lean mice died due to flu complications.

The results are not surprising to local experts, but Dr. Dean Sienko of the Ingham County Health Department says more studies are needed. However, he says it's long been known that a lean person has a greater chance of beating an infection than someone battling obesity.
