Michigan Lawmakers Cut 1,000 DHS Jobs

Michigan Republicans have voted to eliminate funding for more than 1,000 workers in a state agency that handles welfare, food assistance and child abuse investigations.

Cuts approved Tuesday by a GOP-led House budget subcommittee would do away with nearly 9 percent of positions in the Department of Human Services. The budget is a stark contrast to the one proposed by Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.

House Republicans say job cuts are necessary because they won't go along with Snyder's call to add a surcharge to power bills to cover emergency energy assistance for low-income customers.

Democrats say the budget is dangerous and could hurt Michigan's ability to have lower caseloads for workers required because of a lawsuit.

A Senate panel is expected to pass its human services budget in the afternoon.
