Business in the legislature is starting up again and lawmakers say they're getting ready to plunge into another difficult budget.

"It will not be easy, budgets never are because there's never enough money," said Ari Adler, press secretary for Speaker of the House Jase Bolger.

While opinions are often split down the isle, it seems there's a common theme when it comes to distributing the state's money.

"I want more money for local schools. I feel that's extremely important and I think the K-12 area needs more funding," said Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge.

"I will be fighting any kind of education cuts, I will be fighting cuts that I think will put Michigan backwards in the economy," said Rep. Andy Schor, D-Lansing.

However, the Senate Fiscal Agency is predicting tax revenue will be down so far this fiscal year and education funding cuts may be necessary. The state is waiting to get more concrete numbers on Friday, when the Senate and House Fiscal Agencies plus the Treasury Department will get together for a revenue estimating conference.

"That will give us a better indication of what economists think will be happening with the economy as a whole and what that's going to mean for the state budget," Adler said.

It's unclear if any of that will be discussed on the first day of sesson for 2013. On Wednesday, the house will officially elect its speaker and new representatives will be sworn in.

I would not call it a chaotic lame duck session. I would say a productive one. They did more work in three weeks than they did in 23 months.
