Neighbors Upset About Trash Problem

There's a messy problem going on around Lansing.

Piles of garbage - from CDs to sofas - aren't making it into bags, much less trash cans.

In Moores Park, it seems litter bugs have taken over.

"It's an eye sore," Terry Chapman said. "We're getting trash dumped all over the roads, the sides of the roads, in vacant houses, in our city parks."

The back of Washington Park is a common dump site for people, so much so rocks were added in an attempt to block the road way to the area. The neighborhood association has several complaints of people dirtying up their fellow neighbors' yards, too.

"They get done with whatever they're eating, and they toss the trash on the ground," Moores Park Neighborhood Association President Paul Johns said. "Or maybe there's an economic issue here, where they can't afford trash service and they're dumping their trash in alley ways."

For a bulk item like a sofa or bed to be picked up, a sticker from the city costs more than $30. Even if a different person puts it on your property, it becomes your problem.

"There's an elderly person in our neighborhood that's having a trash problem," Johns said. "I'll drive over with my truck and pick it up, I don't have a problem with that, and I will incur that cost. I can't do it repeatedly, and that's where we call in the city."

The city admits trash isn't just an issue in Moores Park -- it's happening across Lansing. The city's director of public services said it's par for the course this time of year as the snow melts and people spring clean.

"We do a lot of coordination, working with the police department," Lansing Director of Public Services Chad Gamble said. "Write them up a fine and make sure that they understand that this isn't an appropriate thing to do, and we're all called to keep our city clean."

Gamble said it's almost impossible for the city to keep up with cleaning right now, and he encourages neighborhood clean ups.

"I know the church went and picked up a bunch of trash, and neighbors come together and help neighbors," Johns said.

If your neighborhood has a trash problem, call the city's public services department or your city council represenative.

Bulk items can be taken care of within three days once someone is alerted.

    I live in this neighborhood, it's the foot traffic throughout the area that contributes to the trash. Kids and adults walking between stores, parks and bus stops; dropping trash and plastic grocery bags along the sidewalks and streets. Daily, I pick up potato chip bags, water bottles, candy wrappers, cigarette boxes, chicken bones, etc... from my yard and alley access. They throw trash over my privacy fence! It's a disgusting mess the city needs to address with stiffer fines.

    The couch they keep refering to was left behind after someone moved out of the neigborhood. They had a U-haul there for 3 days before the couch was left outside. That's how much the residents pay attention to whats going on around them...but the kids throwing trash in yards on the way to the bus in the morning needs to stop.

    This is prime example of why trash collection should be brought in house If trash collection was put on property taxes and collected by the city it could be done for so much less as a service than any co. could do as a profit base biz. When the city contracts out the service the cost to the taxpayers is much greater! Exmple is when a contractor was called in they billed the city for a min. of 3yds of trash regaurdless of what was picked up! Many times it was a tire or a couch maybe some trash bags or a boxspring and the city paid nearly $400 to the contractor! when the city did it, the cost was for time spent. The same held true for the mowing of red tagged homes. If the pickup was put on city taxes like recycle everyone regaurdless of there economics could put trash on the curb for collection. homes being rented and owned could be cleaned up on a regular basis and the effect would be a cleaner city with less violations and illeagle dumping do economics! Yes in begining it would be a challange for the city but as things move along after the begining clean up it would level out! If there are federal funds for neighborehood clean ups as Chad Gamble promotes then the city should on behalf of it's residents apply for all neighborehoods and do a city wide clean up as they did years ago! I also find that the POLICE are being called for trash! Where are the inspectors laid off and elliminated? that was there job! It's the job of the police to fight crime not trash!
